Expanding our Classroom: Welcome Gladys Brown to the Scholars Family
We are excited to introduce you to Gladys Brown, our new College Seminar instructor! Gladys Brown, has dedicated over 20 years to education and music production, working with middle and high school students in Minnesota, NYC public schools, and schools in South Korea. As a hip-hop diplomacy ambassador for the U.S. Department of State's Next Level program, she has used music to bridge cultures worldwide. While her career in education spans two decades, Gladys began teaching music production just before the pandemic, piloting this groundbreaking program in a Bronx high school. She has led workshops for Berklee College of Music in Abu Dhabi and Boston, Manhattan College, The New School, Hostos Community College, and Universidad Nacional Arturo Jauretche in Buenos Aires, Argentina. Gladys is passionate about empowering students to think critically, explore their creativity, and unlock new possibilities through the transformative power of music and learning. Her diverse experiences and passion for education will undoubtedly enrich our classroom, and we look forward to the perspectives and energy she’ll bring to our students!

A Look Into the Classroom
A look Into Student Life
Our scholars engage in plenty of other enrichment programs outside of the classroom, gaining hands-on experience and prepping for life in college.
October and November was an exciting month for our students as they took part in a memorable field trip to New Jersey. The trip was filled with enriching experiences, starting with a Time Management workshop to help students refine their organizational skills. They also met with guest speaker, Annel Mitchell, Director of Development at the Bridges Outreach Organization who spoke about her career journey from college to getting her first break at peacekeeping for the United Nations. After her talk, students engaged in a community service activity, making packed lunches, to support Bridges Outreach’s vital work at fighting homelessness in NJ. As always our trips focus on the whole students. They traveled to Home Power Yoga where they practiced yoga together explored stress management techniques and discussed nutrition as a holistic approach to well-being.
On December 21st, our college seminar teachers organized an experiential trip to The Metropolitan Museum of Art where students enjoyed a guided tour through galleries showcasing masterpieces from a range of periods, including Ancient Egypt, European Paintings, and Modern Art. These tours provided an engaging opportunity to connect with art in meaningful ways and deepen their understanding of both the creative process and world history. In addition, the group explored the Afro-Futurism exhibit and were able to make deeper connections to the current text they are reading in class, “Parable of the Sower” by Octavia Butler. We always break bread together and discuss our learnings from the day and this trip took the students to explore Thai food! It was a day of learning, reflection, and community.

Scholar Spotlight: Otis

This month, we’re proud to shine a well deserved spotlight on our hardworking high school senior, Otis Cramer. Over the past few months, Otis has put in incredible effort, earning many deserved college acceptances (with more to go!). Beyond his academic success, Otis is always eager to engage in class discussions and is a true source of encouragement for his peers.
As Otis reflects on his journey, he shares, “Gotham Scholars has developed me by making me more social. I want to take on more challenges, get involved in the world, and do as much as I can. I know I wouldn’t be like that if it wasn’t for Gotham Scholars. My favorite part of Gotham Scholars is definitely the people in it. They have kept me going and helped me grow and improve so much. I would not be the same without them.”
Whole Student Support
As part of our mission of supporting the whole student, we are grateful for our partnerships with Home Power Yoga and City Center Psychotherapy. In 2025, we are working to add new areas of enrichment and creative escape through performing arts and STEM based programming. Stay tuned!

A Look Back at Fall
What's Coming Next
WINTER WORKSHOP FOCUSED ON NEW AREAS IN STEM, PERSONAL FINANCE & SERVICE
On January 11th, our students kicked off an exciting and impactful day to launch our Personal Finance course for the year! Students met their course instructor, Deepti Gupta, and got a sneak peek into what the semester holds, participating in engaging diagnostic games to help tailor the curriculum to their needs.
The day will also be about making a meaningful difference, as we support Bridges Outreach in their ongoing fight against homelessness. Students packed over 100 lunches in 2024 and have beating that goal this year. This workshop was their first day to work towards that goal.
We dove into the future of technology with a hands-on STEM workshop hosted by Innovation Foundry. Students explored new tools in design, laser cutting, and 3D printing, all while sparking their creativity and problem-solving skills.
This in-person was another example of how Scholars works hard to blend of learning, mental health & self reflection, community service, and innovation all while having fun together.
SPRING TRIPS COMING SOON!
This March, April & May Scholars is planning more trips than ever before. Our teachers work hard to bring their lessons to life in the real world and are planning exciting trips in Manhattan and real-world budgeting and meal planning in local grocery store.
Stay tuned on these and our upcoming college trips
